The Federal Government of Papua New Guinea ought to ban Rugby Union from being played in PNG

The sport of Rugby League is Papua New Guinea's most popular sport.  A successful PNG Kumul's Rugby League team would mean a lot to the people of PNG.  The nations's sporting pride is held in its national Rugby League team's strength.

Rugby Union is arguably a minority sport in Papua New Guinea.  Its popularity in PNG is dwarfed by Australian Rules Football's popularity in PNG.

Killing off Rugby Union in PNG will give the PNGRFL the potential to entice Rugby Union players/fans into following Rugby League.

Therefore, it would be best for the PNGRFL, the people of PNG and the RLIF to kill off Rugby Union in PNG.  In my opinion, Rugby Union deserves this fate as it has used thuggish tactics to thwart Rugby League Development since 1895.  It's about time the RLIF community gave the IRU thugs a taste of their own medicine.

Interesting notion in a democracy. Let them play rah-rah if they wish as it is a minority sport there and will never really grow as long as the Kumuls, State of Origin and the NRL are successful.

The one thing we dont want to do is go down unions path and ban anyone, it only makes you look bad to the public eyes. They would love us to do this so they can use it against our game. I like the idea of including P.N.G players in the nrl system, we should keep incouraging them to make it to top grade sides.

A bit over the top. But I strongly believe that RL should promote the underhanded means by which RU has thwarted the attempts to grow RL worldwide. I spoke to a young female the other day and told her of what happened in France during WW11 and the banning policy of the South African RU in 1995 after Australia flogged the Rhinos in Newcastle England. The female was taken aback at this information and I believe her perception of both RU and RL changed for the better!

Man yesterday was a crazy crazy crazy day in UK RL... Congrats to the Crusaders and Salford in making the Super league. 2012 will defo see Widnes in and I hope either Halifax and toulouse... leigh once again shot themselves in the foot with their absolutely dumb remarks. Absolutely flabagasted that it didn't even raise an eyebrow down under.

But yes, the banning policy in SA, didn't hear much about that either... am intereted to know... France well one of the most untold stories in RL and sport in general. Very contentious issue still as the French courts have basically said that FFRXIII can sue FRU but wont as they dont have the money for the challenge and would cause more issues than solve. Better to let sleeping dogs keep sleeping.

The last thing RL needs is to go and do what we fought against for over 100 years. One of RL's endearing qualities was the fact that they took in anyone who wanted to play no matter what their background was.

Very true. I was in London at the time and read the article in a News Ltd publication. Thousands & thousands of SA Rugby Union players approached the SARL to join after the 82-6 thrashing the Rhinos copped against the Kangaroos. In response to this the SARU threatened to ban any players that signed on to play RL.

Very true. And Im sure this has been replicated in many countries over the years!

The RL struggle is a fascinating story in itself and should be told to as many people as possible.

Not a problem. Hope you can use it in addition to the French example in explaning the unsportsmanlike, biggotted conduct of RU administrators over the years! In the end , as a keen sportperson, I believe the better sport will rise to the top but it will be a massive struggle!

Re: The Federal Government of Papua New Guinea ought to ban Rugby Union from being played in PNG

The International Rugby Board (IRB) cannot turn around and accuse us of halting the development of their game in new territories without making themselves look hypocritical.  It would generate a lot of media coverage and allow the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) -- and their affiliates -- to talk about RU's curtailment of RL since 1895.  Lots of publications and television networks would be interested in speaking with the RLIF and and its affiliates because it would spike the newsworthiness of the story.

The beauty of doing this is it would catch-on with people as it would be viewed as a fashionable trend.  I reckon a fair amount of the youth would support RL over RU because they would see it as being "cool" to rebel against the bigger, more established sport of RU.

Demonising the sport of RU for its thuggish tactics could open up a niche for Rugby League development within non-Caucasoid communities in South Africa, New Zealand and possibly the USA.

    South Africa

It wouldn't surprise me to see a lot of blacks in South Africa take up Rugby League because Rugby Union is a white man's sport in RSA; the vast majority of the South African Rugby Union's registered players are Caucasian.

    New Zealand

The same angle could be pushed among the Maoris who believe they're a marginalised class.  Bringing attention to the fact a lot of Polynesians play in the NRL and ESL would make them feel welcome as they would see Rugby League is for everyone.

    USA

America's black population have not taken to Rugby Union.  The RLIF and the AMNRL could bring them onside by a) showing them the high amount of Polynesians who play the game and b) how they can relate to the game as it has been victimised like they have been.

The aforementioned tactics may not be underhanded.  However, if they have the potential to strengthen Rugby League at Rugby Union's expense then I think they should be implemented by the RLIF, SARL, NZRL, AMNRL and the PNGRFL.

ps. I do not want the RLIF to spread evil liberalised/PC propaganda to stir up hatred between blacks and whites.  Instead, I wnat the RLIF to promote the fact that RL is a sport for everyone.

Re: The Federal Government of Papua New Guinea ought to ban Rugby Union from being played in PNG

If you compare all rugby type codes, rugby league is the most democratic of them all! Its rules allow for everyone to have a decent chance at running with the ball, tackling & passing. This is akin to why soccer is so global-everyone has a good chance to play a major element of the game. The only reason RL is not the dominant rugby code is due to RU administrators unsportsmanlike/underhanded tactics of the past and present day. I might add that their has been some massive mistakes made by people withing RL over the years. Two major ones in Australia have been the Super league idea/war and to not affiliate touch football into the ARL in the mid 1990s!!
